Too many tourists think that NYC is just Manhattan but that’s not the case at all. In fact to many native New Yorkers Brooklyn is the “real” New York City and you haven’t truly been to New York until you have checked out Brooklyn.

This is why the next time you take a trip to New York, don’t just stay in Manhattan but instead visit some of these cool places in Brooklyn.

1. Etsy Headquarters. The best online shop for interesting handmade jewelry and other stuff is Etsy.com and their headquarters are in Brooklyn! At 55 Washington St. in the DUMBO neighborhood you can check out Etsy Labs which has some really fun exhibits. If you live in Brooklyn then that’s even better because you can become a monthly member and use all of their cool stuff whenever you want!

2. Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Both children and adults love this place. You can see some of the most interesting plans in the world at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and it’s also quite a romantic place because it’s so beautiful. There have been quite a few weddings held here.

3. New York Transit Museum. With the Met, the MoMA, the Guggenheim, and the Natural History Museum, Manhattan has a well deserved reputation as the greatest place in the world for museums but Brooklyn has some wonderful museums too including the New York Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn. Children usually love this place and so do quite a few adults. This museum actually used to be a NYC subway station.

4. Brooklyn Bridge Park. Get a great view of what is probably the most famous bridge in the world. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world. It was completed in 1883! For the first 20 years of its existence (up until 1903) it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.

5. Coney Island. It’s a bit of a long trip from Manhattan but Coney Island is certainly worth it! There’s nowhere else in New York City the crazy carnival atmosphere of Coney Island. It’s great the way you feel like you’ve taken a trip back in time there. Coney Island is also the home of the New York Aquarium.

6. Foster’s Restaurant. Of the thousands of restaurants in Brooklyn, Foster’s Restaurant may be the most highly recommended and reviewed! It’s worth the trip to the Forte Greene neighborhood to taste this delicious soul food. Of course soul food isn’t health food so this probably isn’t a good choice for anyone who is watching their weight.

7. South. It’s somewhat surprising that the top ranked bar of the over 500 bars in Brooklyn is called “South.” The south isn’t exactly what one thinks of when one thinks of Brooklyn! Not only does this Windsor Terrace bar have a great atmosphere and great service, it’s also rather affordable with some great deals during happy hour.
