As the fall season comes around in Columbia, there are lots of activities to charm citizens and visitors. Whether or not you’re avid football enthusiasts, festival goers, or simply just looking for something to entertain your children, Columbia has something for everyone to have enjoyment from. Here are a couple of of Columbia’s top fall events.
To countless sports fanatics in the South, fall means college football. The University of South Carolina Gamecocks, currently ranked #12 in the united states, play 7 games at home in Columbia this year. The Gamecocks’ home opener is versus Navy on September 17. Then they play Southeastern Conference rivals Vanderbilt on September 24, Auburn on October 1, Kentucky on October 8, and Florida on November 12. They complete their season at home against The Citadel on November 19 and Clemson on November 26. Williams-Brice Stadium is found at 1125 George Rogers Boulevard.
Food devotees will cherish Viva La Vista, Columbia’s top food festival. The festivity is organized for Sunday, September 25 from noon to 6pm, and covers 4 city blocks down-town. Participants will be able to sample food from in excess of Thirty preferred dining establishments from the Vista, Columbia’s famous dining, shopping, and entertainment district. The event itself is cost-free, and participants will acquire tokens for testing food and beverages. This is a warm and friendly affair with entertainment on a few stages. Parking is free on down-town streets and in city owned and operated garages.
The South Carolina State Fair can bring lots of people into Columbia just about every fall. The 2011 fair is slated for October 12-23. Visitors will love the 125,000 square feet of exhibit room, specific shows, food and rides. There is going to be totally free stage shows, concerts, mule and donkey races, flower shows, and cooking demonstrations. The midway activities and rides are a highlight for many fair attendees. The fairgrounds can be found on Bluff Road, across from Williams-Brice Stadium.
Small children ages 12 and under will definitely enjoy the annual Boo in the Zoo. Young children can don their Costumes and take part in the dress-up costume celebration, observe the Trick or Treat Trail, and encounter Creepy Creature Encounters. Dates for this year’s Boo at the Zoo are October 14-16 and October 22-30 from 6-9pm. Tickets are $8. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden can be found at 500 Wildlife Parkway, off I-26 at Greystone Boulevard.
